Sometime in 1998 R. B. Griffin contacted Tony Huey to see if he was interested in finding former members of the 908 career field so they could have a reunion. Tony was interested and immediately started a search for former members. He also located Frank Forsythe and Harry White who came on board. Not long after, Jim Weekly, and Frank Tillman also became involved in leading the new association. By 1999 Tony had compiled a list of several hundred names. In 2000 Tony sent a letter to all those on his list. Ken Bhirdo, upon receiving the letter contacted Tony to ask if he could help. He was readily accepted into the group.
This group subsequently had two meetings in Pensacola, Florida. Col. Bill Pace was asked to join the meeting. What initially started as an enlisted endeavor was quickly converted into an enlisted and officer association. Frank Forsythe was voted in as the President of the Association (although the title was never used). Three significant things happened at those meetings: 1) it was agreed the primary purpose was to promote reunions and 2) the group would be known as the Veterinary Service Association and 3) we needed a website. Below is a photo of six of the original members. Frank Tillman and Jim Weekly are absent.
The website was built and Frank arranged for the first reunion to be held in Biloxi, MS in September 2001. Sadly, Tony Huey, who put so much effort into the Association, could not attend the first reunion because of the 911 attack. Planes in Alaska were not allowed to fly during that time.
We have had a reunion every year since that time. Sadly, we have lost four of our original members: Col. Pace, Frank Forsythe, R.B. Griffin, and Frank Tillman. Jim Weekly is no longer involved.
Our Association is loosely knitted in that we have never declared ourselves a formal organization. We have a number of us who try to find someone to arrange the next reunion. As I write this we have had 19 reunions and the 20th is planned in San Antonio, Texas sometime in September 2020. William Armitage is handling those arrangements. Tony Huey, Harry White and Ken Bhirdo, who were part of the original group, are still involved. Bill Armitage, Tom Hilla, Bob Mathewson, Dennis Martindale, Steve Tilson, and Tim Donaldson are also involved in the planning process.
As our membership ages it has become more and more difficult for members to attend. We hope our members will use this Message Board as a means of staying in touch with other members.
If you are going to use this message board, and we hope you do, please take a little time to read this This message will remain at the top of the page. All other messages will follow this topic.

The password’s primary purpose is to prevent “drive-by” Internet thugs from making unwanted remarks. This platform is used by millions all around the world so security needs to be enhanced much more than our other site. To accomplish this we have password-protected our site, and require each user to Register and then Login to allow them to read messages and articles and to enter into discussions with others. We have tried to make the registration and login process as simple as possible. (more…)
